Remove Blank Lines For Empty Fields

Remove paragraph returns inserted for empty fields. This is especially useful for mailings in which you have an optional address field. This option ignores soft returns. If any characters, including spaces, appear on the line, the line is not deleted.

 

I am finding, however, that even though the empty fields are indeed empty and this option is selected, the Data Merge is leaving behind a paragraph return. I am using Adobe Indesign CC 2017.

 

Example:

 

<<Name>>¶

<<Address_1>>¶

<<Address_2>>¶

<<Address_3>>¶

<<City>>, <<State>> <<ZIP>>

 

Becomes

 

John Doe¶

123 Main Street¶

¶

Hometown, IL 60456

 

Since Address fields 2 and 3 were blank in the CSV source (ex: 123 Main Street,,,Hometown,IL,60456), I would expect the "Remove Blank Lines" to remove BOTH blank lines... but only one is removed.

 

Can anyone provide any advise on how to make this function as the help apparently claims it will?

I am trying to print a 24 half page booklet from Indesign. I am printing to a Alta Link C8045 printer.  It will not print all the pages and it cuts off the top and the bottom of the graphics on each page it does print.

I work in Prepress on a fast 8 core Mac Pro with 8GB DDR3 RAM.

 

Doing a Data Merge using InDesign CS4 - here are the details:

     Blank document (setup as #10 envelope)

     No graphics

     One text box with 10 fields:

          FirstName     LastName     TrayNumber     SortPosition

          Address1     Address2

          City     State     Zip

          Intelligent Mail Barcode

     8500 records in CSV file - no other data fields - just those placed in document

 

When merging 200 records, the merge is successfully done in around 3 seconds.

 

When trying to merge all 8500, the merge never completes - it takes about 15 minutes just to get to the "finding overset text...", and then I must close InDesign because it quits responding.

 

I tested doing a mail merge with the same data in Microsoft Word and it was done in a less than 2 minutes.

 

I tried this on 2 different Macs with the same non-results and can't believe InDesign's data merge functionality is this poor or inept.

 

Please - any insights?

Hello

For some reason indesign has simply stopped syncing my fonts from about two days ago. I have gone on to preferences to try and turn it on and off like I read to do, but there is no sub-section in my preferences that says sync settings or fonts. It goes straight from general to interface sub-sections. I don't know why it has done this out of the blue, any advice would be great!

 

p.s. Most technology goes right over my head.

I know about the clunky workarounds for this missing feature in InDesign.

The tables are placed and linked from Excel and I'm trying to come up with a table continued line that doesn't require a lot of manual work each time the table is changed in Excel and updated in InDesign.

Does anyone know of a efficient way to do a table continuation line in InDesign when a table spans multiple pages and need to be updated frequently?

Hi everyone,

 

I am new to this forum.

 

I need some advice on InDesign.

 

I have taken some screenshots of the problem, as it is hard to explain.

 

Basically when I change the backgroud color of this rectangle to black (different to my own colour that) I loose the small squares and the frame that passes over the squares. I can highlight them though which is really odd and I cannot send them to the front with the arrange mode.

 

Also when I tried to copy this to photoshop I get something completely different. (Last Picture).

Hi,

 

Since I updated to Indesign CC 2018, I've had problems with Indesign unexpectedly quitting as well as anytime I move something, anything on a page or try to move to the next page in a document, I get the spinning wheel for about 15/30 seconds which is slowing down my workflow.

 

I also have had a message on 3 occasions to say Indesign is shutting down due to a serious error (please see attached screen grab).

 

Any help would be appreciated.

When I save and place a Photoshop PDF, text layers export as vectors but vector smart objects and paths get rasterized. Is the Photoshop PDF place and export of vectors limited to text objects, or am I missing something in the Photoshop PDF dialog?

Hello everyone,

I have a number of indd files that I had exported into PDFs. I then have a separate indd document that is built by compiling all these PDFs using Scripts. I am trying to create Table of Contents for this master document, but can't get a clean ToC. Here is what I currently have:

 

I have no idea where these "B"'s are coming from, and need to have them removed.

Also, all page names are showing up fine as separate lines, except for "Dwight". I don't understand how since all page names have the same paragraph style.

 

Help, please?

Is there a way to use editable fractions within InDesign? I tried using math type and it pastes a vector. I am using stacked fractions and long square root symbols.

 

 

In order to edit any math equation,  I have to open math type application separately, and edit it. Is there any other suitable way for this? I am using CC 2018 version on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

Hi，

    Since I updated my mac to 10.14，Indesign constantly crashes when launching

    I’ve tried  uninstalling or reinstalling（even the mac os） but all to no avail.

Is there a way to export an InDesign layout to a PSD layered format. I'm aware of the idea of exporting a PDF and opening in PhotoShop. But I'm looking for a cleaner way of doing that.

I'm running INDD CC on an iMac. I have a TOC with two levels: Chapter and Header. As expected, the Header level picks up headers from throughout the doc and lists them with the page numbers. All weight and font sizes are fine BUT....Many of the headers have certain words colored differently. I am not using a character style to add the second color. The color is simply picked from the color palette. The problem is that color is showing up in the TOC. The TOC Paragraph Style is set to black.  Because the page numbers are a separate color and font character style, I can't just override all.  I'd have to go through each secondary color block one at a time.

 

So the basic question is: How do I override the secondary color from the headers that appear in my automated TOC?

Hi there everyone,

 

I am wondering if 16 GB of ram will be enough to run a large InDesign document - a magazine of 100 pages with images (photographs) on most pages.

 

I would probably have Photoshop open at the same time - resizing images as I go.

 

I am going to purchase a MacBook Pro 15'' - upgrading from a much older model. The extra ram is very expensive - so I'm hoping to avoid it and use another device for any other multitasking I need to do.

I have an indesign file containing my protfolio at about 2.8 gb. I have had numerous other files that were significantly larger yet never had any problems other than lag every now and then. I worked on this file several times on and off and had no problem reopening to save and come back later. I now am trying to open it and it just won't open. I have searched online and can't seem to find and answer. The file selects and looks as if it is opening the bar comes up on the screen showing "opening document" and then the lock file disappears from my desktop but nothing opens. There isn't any errors or corruption messages, it just won't open even though it looks like it will.

 

Any advice?

Is there a way to tag a bunch of images at once (of course with the same tag (S))?  For instance I have ten images of a flower that i want to tag "flower".   Can I avoid going through each one separately and applying the tag?  Thanks in advance.

Would it be recommended to directly copy-paste or do I have to save it as .PNG?

ID-CC continuously crashes on me the past 10-14 days. When it restores the file, it will have lost old blocks of content. However, recently edited content is present and correct.

 

I can work an hour or less between crashes. Losing content is making assurance of a complete file pretty low. I've tried to chat with support but I'm working at a coffee shop where they limit connection to 30 minutes without logging back in, so I can't stay on long enough to get someone to connect with me.
