Layered Pdf

Hey there all

This is probably a stupid question nonetheless I am at my wits end so I have to ask or I will go crazy.

I have created a document in ID with interactivity, exported it as a layered pdf and managed to fix all the links/buttons within the document in Adobe DC so all is good up to this point.   Is there a way that the pages and layers cannot be seen and the document works like a static webpage?    I hope I have explained this well - I have checked everywhere for an answer to this and to be honest I am not even sure if it is possible......is this possible?

Can't move objects InDesign Mac on Sierra

$

I have scoured the forum for this issue and apparently a lot of people have the same problem.

There are NO working solutions.

I have only experienced it after upgrading to Sierra.

I have tried deleting all the preferences.

I have tried reinstalled InDesign.

I have tried clean installing Sierra.

Same thing happens every time: InDesign works fine for a while, then at some arbitrary time during the day I can no longer move objects.

Objects are selectable, can be moved with the arrow keys, but click and drag with a cursor does not work.

I also noticed I can not move my dock icons in the macOS desktop when I have this issue with InDesign.

Restarting InDesign does not help.

I simply have to log out -OR- restart and then InDesign works fine and dock icons are movable again.

This is not an acceptable solution for me, nor for anyone else.

Can Adobe and Apple get together to solve this?

TOC Title picking up character style

$

The title of the TOC I've got set up in my document is picking up the character style applied to the first entry in the TOC. If I remove the character style from the section heading being pulled into the TOC as the first entry, the TOC title goes back to its proper dark gray color, but as soon as I reapply the character color to the section heading being pulled into the TOC as the first entry and update my TOC, the title changes color to blue. Is there a way to fix this?

Or maybe there is a different way to accomplish what I'm going for. Each section of my document is color coded, and I'm trying to pull that color coding into my TOC. Here is how I'm currently accomplishing that:
Each section heading being pulled into the TOC is white text on a colored background. I've made the section heading paragraph style have a character color of gray but at 0%, so it appears white. Then I've applied a character color on top of the fake white to change the text to match the color coding of the section. It still looks white because of the 0% color in the paragraph style. This is all good. When the TOC is generated, the TOC entry style is at 100% of a color, so each section entry appears in the color of the section it comes from due to the character style applied to each section heading. Still all good. But, as I stated above, the TOC title itself (in this case, the word Contents) is taking on that character color of the first entry.

I suppose the easiest fix would be to just remove the TOC title from the TOC itself and have it as separate text, but I'm curious about this functionality. Why is the TOC title taking on the character style of the first entry of the TOC? Is there a way to stop it? Or maybe there's a better way to color code my TOC?

Thanks in advance for any input.

CS5 hangs/stops responding w/busy cursor after inserting image(s)

Hi!

Ive been working for 3 y. Indesign CS5 and now a painful problem arose:

I am working on a bulletine publication (ca.130 pages), there are PSD images to be inserted (6-8 MB average, multilayer),

after linking 10 images ID stopped responding, like it was busy, can only close app. from Win. manager-then it asks for saving as usually but cant save actually-just close it. Actually hangs or gets busy on pressing ENTER/next paragraph-looks like moving remaining text forces some resource consuming task...

ID file is about 9 megs big so quite small by now.

Cant work with it anymore...

Btw. Yes-I did IDML export and reimport, did not help.

Any ideas-anybody,anything?

Cheers,

Distortion of elements in my layout

Just today this problem started, I am in the latest version of CC. I have not updated any software recently. As you can see InDesign creates odd distortions to the type and other times I get large colored boxes overlaying my layout. As soon as I increase or decrease the view size these go away but then return when I do something else to the layout. Thanks for any help.

Master page not copying properly

Hi--I followed these directions on how to copy master pages from one document to another. The pages have a putty gray background (in Layers) but it's not copying that background onto the master pages in the new document. The putty gray Layer is there, and I have the "eye" icon turned on, but it isn't showing up on my pages.

Am I doing this correctly? Do I need to create a new colored background in my new document?

Also, if I decide not to create the colored background first, and just place my photos and text, I can create the background later, right?

Thanks!

Table header bug - mid-row headers

I have submitted a bug report, but wanted to see if this is a real bug, or something else.

InDesign 2017.1

Mac OS 10.10.5

1.  Create table with a header row

2.  Create an object with text wrap set to jump object

3.  Drag the object with wrap over the middle of the table, and then away.

Result: If this object is dragged over the table, an instance of the header row will appear above it, and will not disappear when the object with wrap is moved away. (The header persists when the page is printed, so it's not just a display error)

I can get rid of the row by moving the wrap object over the top row of the table, and then removing it

Why is PDF darker than ID file?

$

I am designing a series of typographic posters in ID CS4. I convert each to PDFs and they look fine.

With one exception. It depends on subtle tonal changes and every PDF version I've tried makes the tones darker. I am attaching two screen captures. The lighter is from the ID original. The darker from the PDF. The changes are somewhat subtle but important. The drop shadows seem to get darker a bit more than the words. How can I get more tonal/color accuracy? Which PDF setting is best? Or must I play (how?) with color settings altogether to get ID and PDFs more in sync colorwise?

Indesign constantly crashing, freezing. We work off of servers.

$

Anyone who can help, I know this is a great deal of info but please read below. We work on Macs. Sierra OS. Our Indesign files are saved on a server. We work off of that server.

I have been dealing with the following problems on a daily basis. Today alone, I tracked it and had to restart my computer 7 times because of Indesign related problems.

1.) First and most common issue seems to be: Indesign freezes and has to be force quit. I know sometimes you have to wait the spinning ball out, but one time it froze, I left the computer, when I came back half hour later it was still frozen. The only solution is to force quit.

2.) Another issue is, when Indesign is force quit because of a freeze, it will not open back up. You click on it to open, and nothing happens. The only way to solve this, is to restart the entire computer.

3.) Another problem I have regularly. You will open the task manager to force quit Indesign. You try it force quit it and it will not do it. Even if the Indesign window isn’t open, the program is still running (even if it won’t open).

4). Also…when you are working on a grid, and you save as you are working, the dialogue box will pop up that says something like “can’t save because the file is open in another program.” I know if you close out and save again, it works, but we shouldn’t have to do that. Also I have noticed, sometimes when you close it and save again, it does not really save the work. I have done that, had Indesign crash, opened the file back up and found that it did not save my work.  I know this probably has to do with the servers as well.

From another account....

  1. Indesign Crashes and won’t come back up. However, when mine does it, it almost never reopens. I almost always have to hard restart with the button in the back of my computer. Sometimes I’ve noticed that Finder crashed along with it.  Not sure if that’s causing the issue in the first place
  2. Indesign closes without warning. Then when it opens it says it had to close due to an error…
  3. I save my file every 1-2 minutes, but after a crash, sometimes the file will not have saved at all.  I have to start the entire job over again even though I saved it multiple times. This does not happen all the time, but when it does, it inevitably happens when it’s a really in-depth ad or multiple ads…..
  4. Photoshop crashes along with Indesign. I know this because when Indesign crashes I try to refresh Creative Cloud, which requires all Adobe programs to be closed. I try closing Photoshop and it just says “not responding”, and then I have to restart my computer.  This goes along with problem #1 above.
  5. My file becomes super corrupt after crashing sometimes. Like, super corrupt to the point where if I just click on the file to open it, it crashes without even attempting to open it. Several times already I’ve had to have Emily open the file for me and put it in a new file (because renaming won’t even work) in order for me to be able to use it. Usually this takes me 15-20 minutes because this is what I have to go through: Indesign crashes, I try to reopen the file, it crashes again - I try again, it crashes - I rename the file, it crashes – I restart my computer, it crashes – I ask Emily to open and it works for her – I ask Emily to rename, but it  still crashes for me – I ask Emily to put it in a new file – It works….  What makes it even worse is that these are the times that my ad generally doesn’t save. And so I may have completed an ad entirely, had it crash when I go to save (even though I already exported it!), have to spend 15–20 minutes doing this, then I have to remake the ad again…. Way frusterating…

Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

$
0
0

When InDesign starts to behave strangely, the number one suggestion for troubleshooting is to replace (or trash, reset or restore) the application preferences. This will remove corrupt preferences and replace them with a new set of default preferences, and often end bad behavior.

There is a quick and easy method for doing this using the keyboard: close and relaunch InDesign, and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences. There are two downsides to this method, however. First, you must be extremely fast on the keyboard (if you don’t see the confirmation prompt, you were too slow), and second, anytime you replace the preferences you will lose most program customizations, and using the keyboard method leaves you with no backup to restore them when the problem turns out to be something else.

My preferred method is to CLOSE INDESIGN and do a “manual” prefs replacement, which consists of finding and renaming the two files which make up the preference set: InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData. BOTH of these files should be replaced at the same time. You can delete them, but renaming or moving them will give you the opportunity to copy them back in the event that new prefs doesn’t cure your issue. When you restart ID, the program will look for these two files, and when they are not found, a new default set will be written.

[Defunct link removed by Peter Spier on 11/6/15]

These are normally hidden files, so you will need to set your system to show them. They will be found in various places depending on the OS, and the version of InDesign. (Edit: For Mac users running OSX 10.7 or newer, you can learn how to show hidden files here:Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion)

PLEASE LOOK AT THESE PATHS CAREFULLY. They look similar, but are two different folders for the two files.

InDesign Defaults:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<language>\  (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

Windows Vista or Windows 7 and newer: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

InDesign SavedData:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

Windows Vista or Windows 7 and newer: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\  (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).

In some earlier versions of ID, InDesign SavedData may also be found in the first directory.

As mentioned above, when you replace your preferences you will lose customizations beyond those things that are set in the preferences dialogs. These include Document and Print Presets you might have created. If you haven't made backups already, you should go, prior to replacing the preferences, to the "Define" dialogs for printer and document presets and custom stroke styles, and select all of your custom entries, the click the save button and put the file someplace safe. After resetting preferences using the keyboard or by renaming/deleting the old files and restarting InDesign, these customized settings can be re-loaded with a single click once again in the Define dialogs.

PDF presets can be backed up in the same way, but they are stored in a different location and will not be destroyed by a simple preference reset. Other customizations that you should not lose are workspaces, keyboard shortcut sets, and find/change queries.

As a further step I strongly recommend that you make a copy of these two files when you have a working customized set. Store them in a safe place and you can use them to overwrite a corrupt set so no further editing or reloading will be required. Users of InDesign CS4 can use a free script from InTools.com to backup and store multiple sets of preferences: In-Tools Scripts » Preference Manager Script

Edit: Corrected Mac Path per Jongware's post below.

UPDATE: I just ran across a situation in which overwriting the InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData files failed to restore functionality to the tools on a single user account on a multiple user system (the other account was fine). This is an absolute first and I've been using the technique for years, including replacing these two files on this system which is used by the student newspaper where I was a professor, in order to customize or restore preferences every semester. What did work was to use the keyboard method first, then close InDesign and manually replace the two files to restore the prefs to the proper settings.  -- Peter

Further update: We have had several reports now in the CC versions of InDesign where using the manual method has failed to solve problems that are normally fixed by replacing preferences. to the best of my knowledge, using the keyboard method has solved the problem for each of those users. -- Peter

Awesome New Adobe Creative Break Initiative!

$

I'd like to thank Adobe for it's hugely successful creative break initiative! At first I was annoyed and perplexed, but I think I get it now. I'm often tempted to work productively in Indesign for way too long without a break, and I'm thankful to Adobe for helping me avoid this. Two hours of productive work, or even one, can be unhealthful without breaks, so Adobe has brilliantly programmed Indesign to occasionally disappear, helping me to notice that I have been getting actual work done for probably way too long.

These breaks seldom result in lost work, thanks to Indesign's excellent auto-saving functionality, and the specially designed extended application launch and file recovery process takes just long enough that I don't want to sit and wait, so I get up and walk nervously around the room until I can confirm that I've only lost the last ten minutes or so of work. (But it's been an hour or so since my last break—that those final 10 minutes were probably getting slightly less efficient anyway.)

My only question is why be so secretive? I can't find any documentation on this new feature. I would think an idea like this would be used in marketing!

Also, I'd like to adjust the settings slightly so that I could get a small warning. Or maybe a dialog confirming that it wasn't just a standard, usual, normal, regular old Adobe application crash. I do understand that it wouldn't be a good idea to let users opt out of the feature, considering that it's in the best interest of our health, but I might like to adjust the timing slightly, or maybe have the option of keeping that last 10 minutes' work for those occasional days when I'm trying to make deadlines.

Does anyone know if this feature has any settings that can be adjusted? Or does that added functionality only come with the upgraded $80/month subscription?

Artwork from Illustrator to InDesign?

I've been having this issue where when I drag artwork/graphics made in Illustrator from my library then place it in my InDesign. It usually ends up horribly pixelated. I've read a few tutorials on how to fix it through preference options but nothing changes. Most of these tutorials don't even display the same prompt boxes either because I'm using Windows apposed to Mac.

Continuous numbering on a drawing

Hi there,

I was wondering if creating each paragraph style for each numbering sequence is the only was to achieve whats in a jpg below.

I have multiple InDesign files with many images which needs to be annotated separately as shown on a image.. To avoid copy/past and retype all numbers i have created a paragraph style to each image. Unfortunately having loads of images to annotate  i will end up with as many Para Styles, which is not a good thing.

Is there any other way to tackle it?

Thanks for help.
