I first noticed this problem when opening an old file that I know I had previously colorize and black and white logo with a swatch. When I opened the file after updating, the placed logo (it's a tiff, the color space is black and white) was black instead of orange. I know that I used to be able to place a black and white image, double click it, and change the black swatch to a color, but now after updating I can't do that. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the program but I've had no luck. Any ideas?
Indesign no longer let's me colorize the blacks in grayscale or black and white linked images after updating.
Indesign Index Sorting
Hey Guys ! I am looking for help !
I am making an Index page and so far I got to this point.
I am trying to "Sort" it by numbers.
By some reason "Sort Paragraphs" Script is messing it up so it doesn't work properly.
I am trying to use Peter Kahrel's Script, but what happens is....
I am reverting the page numbers, as shown above, then i am going into text-condition, and I am hiding all
subheading hoping that they won't get mixed up.
Yet after the scripting is done, the page numbers are in order, but my subheading are all over the place.
Can anyone help me what can I do with this ?
How do I fix CC 2015.5 Opening Files in InDesign Error
At work we recently upgraded to CC 2015.5. Previously I was working on a PC but have just moved to a MAC. I have installed all of my CC applications but I'm having issues opening my InDesign Files from within the application. I was previously working in CC 2014, PC version. When I try to open my files, I get an error message saying InDesign is unable to open the file. Either I don't have permission or the file is already open. On my second attempt to open the files, they will open.
I have checked permissions and I have permission to write and read my files.
I'm able to open files on the first attempt from Finder and the "Open With" command.
I'm also unable to do a "Save As" to the folder where my files need to be. If I do a "save as" to my desktop, InDesign will save the files. I can then move the files to the proper folder, reopen and proceed with my work.
PLEASE HELP if you know what might be causing these errors.
Indesign CC Bridge Button issue
When inside of Indesign CC, when I hit the bridge button in the UI it's opening the CC dropdown from the Finder and not actually opening bridge.
Additionally, when I select an image and hit "reveal in bridge" the same action occurs, the CC menu opens and scrolls down to the bridge icon (not helpful).
**Update** The same functionality works in Illustrator, so I know that Bridge registration is not the issue.
Latest versions of all apps are installed, with the exception of the Playskool Version of Acrobat.
Obviously uninstall and reinstall might fix the issue, but am on deadline and do not have time for that. Anything I can edit, from a text file standpoint, or a pref I can delete to remedy the issue?
Helpful feedback is welcome.

InDesign - Datamerge skips and re-orders data
Hi everyone. I'm having a bit of trouble with a feature of InDesign that I have a lot of experience with, and I'd appreciate a second pair of eyes to possibly spot something ridiculously simple that I'm missing.
I have a lot of experience with DataMerge, and a particular template that has been used several dozen times in the past six months has suddenly been acting wonky. It seems to skip the first 11 rows or so of the .csv file, repeat the next line 10 times, continue with the next few rows, then repeat the same line from before another 40 or so times.
There are no hidden columns/rows in the CSV file. And just to make sure, I've re-created the file three different times, even copy/pasting the data into a fresh workbook. No dice. And I can confirm that I'm using the correct CSV file every time.
Under the datamerge options, it is set to "All Records", and "Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields" is left unchecked. Weirdly enough, the Preview Multiple Record Layout lays everything out correctly. As does the single record preview. But as soon as I actually merge, it trips over itself.
In the interests of being as thorough as possible, below are the screenshots of the step by step along the way:
1. The CSV file. Everything is in alphabetical order, starting with "ALAMOS". Only 5 "LIBERTY CREEK" entries:
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge9.jpg
2. The correct CSV file is selected, and the data holders are all properly filled.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge1.jpg
3. Preview shows the first tag being "ALAMOS MALBEC".
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge2.jpg
4. "All Records" is selected.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge3.jpg
5. Multiple Record Layout options (not sure if anything here is relevant)
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge4.jpg
6. "Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields" is unchecked.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge5.jpg
7. "Preview Multiple Record Layout shows correct data.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge6.jpg
8. Once datamerged, first tag is "LIBERTY CREEK MERLOT" (should be "ALAMOS MALBEC"). Continues "LIBERTY CREEK MERLOT" for 11 entries.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge7.jpg
9. After 7 correct entries, it repeats "LIBERTY CREEK MERLOT" for several pages until the end of the document.
http://ethanguillemette.com/Work/Datamerge8.jpg
I've tried the same template with other CSV files, and similarly skips rows, but not the same one. Additionally, it does the same thing on two different computers.
Am I missed something obvious here? Or is this really broken? It's a barebones template that I could recreate in my sleep, but I'm worried that there's something I don't know I'm doing that is messing things up.

InDesign CC 2015, 11.4.0.90, immediately crashes upon launch. (OS X El Capitan 10.11.6)
We're running 9 InDesign CC licenses and some of them are suddenly crashing immediately upon trying to launch the application. The problem can be reproduced 100%.

Link to one of the many crash reports: https://mirror.maclemon.at/EFqZ5e2UTv.html
I'm used to reading crash reports, of course that one is not symbolicated, so it's hard to check what exactly is going wrong when InDesign Segfauls while trying to display the Splash screen.
Hardware:
iMac 5K, 256GB SSD with > 100GB free space, 32GB RAM, OS X 10.11.6.
Filesystem and privileges are ok. SSD “blockscan” is ok.
All non-Adobe applications are working fine.
I've already wasted several hours of troubleshooting.
This is what I've tried so far:
I followed these Adobe instructions to get ID launching again:
https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-2015-applications-crash-on-launch---mac-os.ht ml
Solution 1:
Install Dreamweaver
Sounds absurd, but we're in production, I'll try anything to get this thing working again.
Dreamweaver could be installed but the CC installer complains about a Patch that didn't work. Uninstalled Dreamweaver again, reinstalled it again.
Yes, I do have retried this installation.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solution 2
Suggests to install an older version of MUSE. Sounds just as absurd as the first one.
That version of Muse isn't shown for installation in neither the current, nor any past versions of CC Installer. I tried with the available Muse option.
I was able to install the current version of Muse, the one required by the Adobe article does not show up for installation anywhere. Neither in current, nor in previous versions. I had my Adobe Account logged out after this installation and had to login again.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Solution 3
Recommends to install Acrobat DC.
This also forces you to uninstall any other Acrobat version you might be using.
Acrobat is said to be installed successfuyll, but doesn't finish launching, not even after waiting for several minutes.I had my Adobe Account logged out after this installation and had to login again.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checked these Adobe instructions:
I couldn't find any permission problem by checking these in the Finder or via the Terminal to see the exact permissions. All permissions for the global Library and the user's Library and corresponding subfolders were exactly as Adobe documents they'd like them to be.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uninstalling/Reinstalling
I've tried completely uninstalling InDesign CC, reinstalling it again.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Completely Remove all CC Applications
I've completely uninstalled all Adobe Creative Cloud and the CC installer application, removed each and every file, cache, preference, etc. that even closely might be involved with anything from Adobe. I've then restarted and reinstalled everything from scratch.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remove everything with Adobe Cleaner
I've used the Adobe Cleaner tool.
https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html#topic -2
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New user Accounts
Of course I've tried the basic things like trying another user account, an admin account, and even a non-admin account.
Also, our users aren't allowed to run admin accounts for security reasons.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checking Fonts
I've verified all fonts and removed any that are not shown as perfectly fine. I also removed those that show only small warnings. I've also tried to disable and even remove all non Apple System Fonts.
This didn't fix the crashes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also the Adobe CC Installer seems to log me out of the Adobe account after each installation so I have to relogin pretty much all the time. The Adobe licensing servers were probably just as annoyed as me from the constant requirement to login and relicense CC over and over and over again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After tons of crashes finally the Adobe Crash reporter also recognized that InDesign is in fact crashing.
Adobe's auto suggestions for solutions didn't find any solution to the problem though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've tried to contact Adobe via their Online Chat option. Sadly that doesn't seem to actually exist, since there is only shown some fictitious availability time, but there is no link to actually use or start that support chat anywhere. So I can't contact Adobe that way either. Their local business support hours close at 5p.m. (17:00) local time anyway, and their US chat doesn't work either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to that I've read multiple threads here on Adobe Discussions, over at Apple discussions, used my favorite search engine to wade through tons of posts on the interwebs. I've found many problem reports of different age showing the same crashing problem, but no working remedy or solution that actually fixes InDesign.
Anything else I've overlooked that I could still try to make InDesign CC work again? Is this a known bug with ID CC 2015 and/or OS X El Capitan?
Can no longer drag anchored images
I used to be able to drag an anchored image from one location to another (ie, one paragraph to another) with the little lock icon. With the last update that disappeared. Now I have to delete and paste my anchored images. Has convenient function really been removed or does it need to be activated?
Can I set multiple font styles for an import from MS Excel into InDesign tables?
Is there a way to "tag" text in MS Excel so that when a table is imported into InDesign each tagged item automatically takes on the style of that "tag"?
I'm working on a project where I'm importing a file of 200+ line entries from MS Excel into an InDesign table, with 3 different font styles in each line. I need to find a way to be able to format all of the entries as they are imported into the InDesign table so tat I don't have to format each word individually afterward.
Each entry needs to look like this:
Section One - Section Two - Section 3 with one to four lines of text that will typically need to wrap
something similar to this so that it wraps under Section One and Section Two.
I want to avoid them looking like this:
Section One - Section Two - Section 3 with one to four lines of text that will only wrap inside
the third column. This needs to wrap under Section One and
Section Two like the sample above.
So basically I have 3 different font styles in each line: bold, bold italics, an then the rest of the text is regular. I know I can set up 3 separate columns, each with their own text style, but I need the text to wrap in a column under Section One and Section Two.
I wasn't sure if I could "tag" the sections somehow in MS Excel to adopt a paragraph style set in InDesign.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

GREP Help
I'm trying to use GREP to turn BC/AD into small caps in titles. The string I've used ( [\s\–]\K[AaBb][CcDd](?=[^0-9a-bA-B]) )
works perfectly if the BC/AD appears in the middle of the title but not at the end, I tried to remedy this with this code [\s\–]\K[AaBb][CcDd](?=([^0-9a-bA-B]|\z)) but that then only works if the BC/AD appears at the end of the story (see images) which makes sense considering I'm saying not followed by any digit or letter or at the end of the story.
I want an expression that finds BC/AD followed by any punctuation OR at the end of the story, is this possible in one style or should I use two?
InDesign Lock Files (.idlk) in Creative Cloud Files
We want to use the Creative Cloud file collaboration in our design group. The only problem is, we all need to open the same InDesign files at separate times. So for instance, we need to open a magazine cover to design it, then an editor can get in there and add headlines.
The problem we are seeing with using Creative Cloud file collaboration is that the temporary lock .idlk file that is created when the InDesign file is open does not sync, so no one knows the file is open by another user. This will cause major headaches when trying to get into the same file, and many different version of the layout.
We usually work off a local SMB server, so when someone has a file open, only one user can get in because of the .idlk file.
Is anyone else using Creative Cloud Files like this, or seeing this same problem? Any help or answers would be awesome.
Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences
When InDesign starts to behave strangely, the number one suggestion for troubleshooting is to replace (or trash, reset or restore) the application preferences. This will remove corrupt preferences and replace them with a new set of default preferences, and often end bad behavior.
There is a quick and easy method for doing this using the keyboard: close and relaunch InDesign, and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences. There are two downsides to this method, however. First, you must be extremely fast on the keyboard (if you don’t see the confirmation prompt, you were too slow), and second, anytime you replace the preferences you will lose most program customizations, and using the keyboard method leaves you with no backup to restore them when the problem turns out to be something else.
My preferred method is to CLOSE INDESIGN and do a “manual” prefs replacement, which consists of finding and renaming the two files which make up the preference set: InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData. BOTH of these files should be replaced at the same time. You can delete them, but renaming or moving them will give you the opportunity to copy them back in the event that new prefs doesn’t cure your issue. When you restart ID, the program will look for these two files, and when they are not found, a new default set will be written.
[Defunct link removed by Peter Spier on 11/6/15]
These are normally hidden files, so you will need to set your system to show them. They will be found in various places depending on the OS, and the version of InDesign. (Edit: For Mac users running OSX 10.7 or newer, you can learn how to show hidden files here:Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion)
PLEASE LOOK AT THESE PATHS CAREFULLY. They look similar, but are two different folders for the two files.
InDesign Defaults:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<language>\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
InDesign SavedData:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
In some earlier versions of ID, InDesign SavedData may also be found in the first directory.
As mentioned above, when you replace your preferences you will lose customizations beyond those things that are set in the preferences dialogs. These include Document and Print Presets you might have created. If you haven't made backups already, you should go, prior to replacing the preferences, to the "Define" dialogs for printer and document presets and custom stroke styles, and select all of your custom entries, the click the save button and put the file someplace safe. After resetting preferences using the keyboard or by renaming/deleting the old files and restarting InDesign, these customized settings can be re-loaded with a single click once again in the Define dialogs.
PDF presets can be backed up in the same way, but they are stored in a different location and will not be destroyed by a simple preference reset. Other customizations that you should not lose are workspaces, keyboard shortcut sets, and find/change queries.
As a further step I strongly recommend that you make a copy of these two files when you have a working customized set. Store them in a safe place and you can use them to overwrite a corrupt set so no further editing or reloading will be required. Users of InDesign CS4 can use a free script from InTools.com to backup and store multiple sets of preferences: In-Tools Scripts » Preference Manager Script
Edit: Corrected Mac Path per Jongware's post below.
UPDATE: I just ran across a situation in which overwriting the InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData files failed to restore functionality to the tools on a single user account on a multiple user system (the other account was fine). This is an absolute first and I've been using the technique for years, including replacing these two files on this system which is used by the student newspaper where I was a professor, in order to customize or restore preferences every semester. What did work was to use the keyboard method first, then close InDesign and manually replace the two files to restore the prefs to the proper settings. -- Peter
Further update: We have had several reports now in the CC versions of InDesign where using the manual method has failed to solve problems that are normally fixed by replacing preferences. to the best of my knowledge, using the keyboard method has solved the problem for each of those users. -- Peter

Issue with displaying Hindi script/font/language properly.
I am using Google Input Tools for writing Hindi text (Indian Language) by typing English letters which gets Transliterated by Google Tool.
Sys Config: Windows 7
InDesign version: CS6
Font used: Mangal (pre-installed in Windows 7)
In some places the text works fine whereas in some characters there are some issues that bar InDesign from rendering them properly. MS Word renders the text precisely.
Screenshots to help you understand my issue:
Screenshot 1: http://lookpic.com/O/i2/880/e6ZOQm5t.png (Testing the Font in MS Word - I)
Screenshot 2: http://lookpic.com/O/i2/904/uydThvO.png (Testing the Font in MS Word - II)

Screenshot 4: http://lookpic.com/O/i2/1514/ioJmqtAi.png (Testing the Font in Adobe InDesign CS6 - II)
As you can see from the screenshots linked above, the MS Word is able to render the Google Input Text properly but Adobe InDesign CS6 doesn't
Please help me solve this problem/issue ASAP. Will be so greatful.
I've no idea about Language/Font support and Scripts (Latin, Unicode, etc)
Footnote marker and comma mess up hyphenation
Hello,
Twice in the past week, I have seen something I had never seen before. A word with a text-only footnote marker tacked on the end hyphenated the last letter of the word: "blanquean^a" became "blanquea-n^a". Then today, I got "Jaco-b,^a", where it split the comma. These are in Spanish, and it's possible the dictionary is more flexible or less developed than the English: USA, which I usually use. Also, I am not using the footnote feature in InDesign since it will not allow two-column text and one-column footnotes.
I have tried several tactics to block this hyphenation, such as a non-joiner before the marker, but to no avail. If I force a no-break in a character style, then I lose the benefit of hyphenation with longer words like "blanquean." The other factor is, I must keep the markers butted against the word or the punctuation; I just don't want the syllables to recompose with the marker added on.
This happened in CC 2015 for Mac (11.1.0.122). Here is a link to the idml of the offending paragraphs for testing: https://biblica.box.com/shared/static/nns61ibng13nfzlk7rpbis9p8tgqnhr9.idml.
Thanks for your help!

Inserting a Separate Text Box Mid-Page on a Two-Column Layout
Hello!
I am working on a book with a two-column layout. At various points, I need to insert what are effectively chapter breaks. Currently, I have one giant text frame that flows for all 65 pages. This layout is (I think?) rendered necessary by scripts I am running for our line numbers and our endnotes.
My initial idea was to put the chapter title in as a separate text frame and wrap the main text around it, so that I could preserve the single frame of the main text. Unfortunately, in the two-column layout, this means that the text in the first column went *below* the chapter title to fill the first column, no matter where I moved it.
I suspect I may need to end the text frame of the first chapter and start a second one for the new chapter to achieve the effect I want. However, I have a few worries about that: first, if I simply ended the text frame, would I have to delete the other 55 pages (after this break) that I have already partially formatted, and re-insert them from scratch in the new chapter's text box? Second, I am also worried that making a separate text frame might ruin my endnote and line number scripts.
(NB: If I need to end this text frame and start a new one, I can't figure out how to do it on an early page of a many-page text frame, so I will need help with that, too.)
Is there a simple way to insert this text box so that the first chapter's text ends neatly in two columns above it, and the next chapter's text begins neatly in two columns below it?
Please see attached screen capture, showing the current state of affairs. The text box has been inserted with a simple text wrap around it.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Durchgestrichener Stift
Hallo,
Vielen Dank!

I want to Ctrl-zoom in CS6, not Alt-zoom - with mouse scroll wheel..
Hi!
Is there by chance a way to change the in- and outzooming in InDesign CS6 to be with key Ctrl instead of key Alt? When using the mouse scroll wheel to zoom, I mean.
I'm used to press Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in and out and now I'm too old to learn using Alt-key instead, it's impossible, the tracks in my head of using Ctrl is too deep. Cannot be erased or replaced.
Or is there perhaps a way to make only the scroll wheel zoom in and out without stroking any key?

Is there an easier way to create navigation buttons?
Hi All,
I'm building an interactive workbook, where at the bottom of the page I have next and previous page icons.
I understand the best way to make them into buttons is to make them hyperlinks - Correct me if I'm wrong.
But, I have ~80 pages - that means setting up >160 hyperlinks (e.g. Page 2 needs "Go to pg1" and "Go to pg3," etc) Each page needs a unique pair of buttons...
Is there a quick way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any help!
