im in urgent help of someone to answer my questions. I have a huge Indesign exam monday and two of the questions are
-resizing a layout
-changing a color layout to black and white
I have done many porjects in Indesign but to be honest i don't know what they are refering but resizing a layout or changing the layout color to black and white. If any body can explain me this a little be I be so thankful!

I have a simple problem that I can't seem to get my wits around:
I am sending a letter to a list of donors.
This list has simple data merge fields:
Name
Donor Status
However, the letterhead needs to have a different color for status. It is the same words but it's a diferent color (which fits that donor status). Is there any way to do this?
So, in my excel it lists
Mike Jones Donor Status 1
Jim Bob Donor Status 2
And the header would be
Wonderful Charity (in blue)
Dear Mike,
As a Donor Status 1 we appreciate your...
(next letter)
Wonderful Charity (in red)
Dear Jim,
As a Donor Status 2 we appreciate your...
----
Any suggestions? A grep style seems to be the clue... but I am still clueless.

With IndyFont you can create fonts for your own bullets, accented characters, special symbols, logo's and more, working only with InDesign itself. The font it creates is a real OpenType file, which you can use with any other software that supports OTF fonts.
The free demo only creates a one-character font, but it is highly recommended to try this first so you can test if it works.

Why do the "SAVE", "SAVE AS" and "UNDO" functions of InDesign CS6 stop working after a short time?

I have 4 text variable in InDesign document, which has about 150 characters length. For example,
When I insert, all those text variable into some paragraph (exactly as inline with other texts), InDesign kern the complete line of text so tight in such a way no one can read. I guess that InDesign count all those variable characters just as 4 characters irrespective they hold 150 characters length. Here is the screen shot pasted. Please advise how to resolve the issue.

My name is Quin, and I've used InDesign CS5 for the past few years and am working on a magazine layout for the first time. I'm suddenly having a really difficult time getting the eye-dropper tool to extract color samples from images i've placed in my layout. These are either jpeg or PDF images. If I recall correctly, in my past use of the program, i could simply click the eyedropper tool in an image and get my color sample – but suddenly, i'm having trouble getting it to sample color/make a color swatch.
I tried double clicking the tool and excluding everything i wouldn't want it to sample. Tried locking/unlocking layers, tried making sure the image frame itself is selected, tried holding down option, tried trashing the preferences (using a 2012 MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion)… most of the time when i attempt to sample a color, nothing shows up in the fill box, except the classic diaognal red line over white.
The exception is when i use the eyedropper to sample non-image base things i've already filled, like a retangle, it picks up the color fine. So it's likely image specific. Is there something really obvious that i'm missing? It's frustrating because i simply want to sample colors to get a rough idea for text colors and headlines that can match images, and there doesn't seem to be a quick way to do this…

What if an article uses a creative layout with multiple text-boxes? Are you supposed to get out your pocket calculator and add them up one-by-one?
I work for a magazine that publishes short, submission-style testimonials bridged together with staff-generated narrative copy; some of our articles use six or more discreet text-boxes. You REALLY MEAN TO TELL ME that there is NO WAY to yield a TOTAL DOCUMENT WORD COUNT using what is SUPPOSED TO BE the MOST ADVANCED page layout application ON EARTH??
Pardon my exasperation in the above comment, but....Seriously?
I need someone knowledgeable to please look me in the eyes and tell me, "This is true", before I am going to be able to let myself believe it.

I am reaching the end of patience with this one and starting to wish i'd not paid for a CS5 upgrade.
I installed under Mac OS 10.5 originally, did all updates and had font and other deathly slow issues in Photoshop.
In the end, I enacted a TOTAL system maintenance routine and upgraded to System 10.6 in order to try and get round probs with CS5.
I since have ditched all prefs, reset all caches, cleared all logs, done total font checks and removed a couple of corrupt ones, repaired disk permissions etc etc etc.... Photoshop 'appears' to work ok, although saving and saving to web can be sluggish (pizza wheel waiting for it....)
InDesign CS5 is now taxing my productivity. I thought it was my Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, but find the issue (at the mo as I've not noticed anything significant yet in Illustrator or Photoshop) only occurs with InDesign CS5.
The issue is the glitchy interface - stepped or delayed movements of objects across the page, selecting menu dialogue boxes can take a second when i click on a value, slightly steppy movements make selecting the tiny up and down arrows on some menus very tricky to be accurate. PLUS saving and saving PDFs in particular as well as PLACE images CMD-D can be deathly slow. It used to be almost instaneous, slowed only by the hard drive firing up. Now i try to do things and have to wait on many actions. It's doing my head in! This is NOT PRODUCTIVE.
In InDesign i have tried turning off Live Redraw, dropping display quality to fast (makes working almost impossible as i need to see what i'm doing), and disabled the Preflight option that is on by default, and i'm sure other options too i've seen on forums. But no better.
I have a Quad Core 3Ghz Intel Mac with 14Gb RAM, and an NIVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
IS this APPLE or ADOBE issue? How on earth can i get my speedy productivity back so i can move around the screen smoothly, save and place quickly, and select menu dialogues without waiting for it to react..... HELP!
When using InDesign CC, every time I hit the text tool button, the program crashes.
In my Adobe InDesign CS6 there is a weird binary in a Utilities subdirectory:

It was running on my system, shown with the 'ps' command as:
adb fork-server server
When looking for that command, it seems to be an Android Debug Bridge. And indeed, when looking at the strings found in this executable, it seems to be Android Debug Bridge (it contains adb's help text). It also contains stuff like information about secure devices (e.g. credit cards) which may be standard in the SSL library linked to it.
It looks like this Android Debug Bridge executable was installed on June 8 on this system. When I start InDesign CS6 it is started and keeps running, even if I quit InDesign. It keeps running even if I log out.
Is this as it is supposed to be or is my system corrupted? As far as I have ben able to check, this has been created using Adobe Installer software.
I am using CC with Windows ultimate. I am a new user of pretty much everything adobe. I am in a class that quickly covered Ps, Ai and now Id. I am trying to import PSD and Ai files into Indesign but both the bitmap and vector files resolution deteriorates significantly when placed in the Id file. The Ai vector file actually pixelates which I thought didn't happen with vector files. The PSD files are all photo files that specified a dpi of 300 and are smaller image sizes than the originals.. Any idea what's happening?
I created a Logo in InDesign CS 5.5. It contains a number of different elements and I grouped all of the lements together. The original size of the Logo is approximately 15.5 X 7.5. I also formatted the interior of a book in InDesign. I copied and pasted the logo on the title page of the book, and resized the logo to around 6.75 X 3.25 by changing the percentage of the image. I am unable to change the width and height directly because it gives me a “Requested Value is not a Legal Dimension” message. After sending the interior to the printer for review, they replied indicating that the image was less than 300 DPI. Is there a way to manage or control the resolution of images originally created in InDesign so that when they are resized, the DPI will still be a desired resolution for print?
I'm working on a book cover project. The complete design including the text layers on the back, are created in PS CS6. I converted to CMYK.
My first concern was setting proper bleeds and trims out of PS. Exporting the PDF.
So, I created my ID doc to spec. Placed the PSD, Set all the PDF X/1a:2001 setting from the printer.
The resulting PDF doesn't look as good as the PS generated PDF viewd in Acrobat. It looks soft.
So my question, do my text layers (non rastered) survive PSD>INDESIGN>PDF?
I don't really want to rebuild the text layers in ID. The cover is finished, just need to generate the best PDF for delivery.
Should I have saved in a different format out of PS?
I've got so many little changes requested, I want to keep my doc most easily editable. That is my reasoning.
My Guess is this slightly softer PDF from ID will print great. But I just want to be sure since I haven't used this workflow before.

I have snow leopard on a virtual machine in virtualbox on my 2.8 GHz quad-core Mac Pro. I had heard of problems with graphics cards which is why I was eperimenting with it in a virtaul machine. I downloaded indesign cc to see if it will work as I it looks like I will have to replicate at home what is used in my workplace to be able to cover extra work. However, when trying to launch the app I get a warning saying "You can't open the application Adobe InDesign CC because it is not supported on this type of Mac."
Now is this due to snow leopard or because it's a virtual machine? Or is it because my mac is 32-bit?

I am creating a catalog of pictures only, as objects.
They are organized alphabetically, 4 images per page as a 2x2 grid, for 20 pages.
I want to insert a NEW object (image) in the middle of these 20 pages, and want all the objects after it to shift over one spot to make room.
How do I get the objects after the inserted ones to shift, as text would if you inserted more text in the middle of a paragraph?
I can't figure out how do do that (without just putting the images in a text box and in-line, but then I lose all the spacing controls)...

So, I'm super new to inDesign, and layout in general. I'm doing my first book, and learning a LOT from my mistakes.
So, here's the current problem. I didn't think to do page numbers and headers before doing pretty much everything else. I'm almost done with pretty much everything else. I didn't do the project as "spreads" because I had no idea that was a thing to differently than just "pages". I haven't done any masters, and I'm under the impression that it's too late to do that now. So, I'm picturing having to manually put in a little one-line text box at the top of every page to put the header and page number in. But, I can't think of how to do that when there's already text in the main full-page text box. Is there some easy way to take care of this? How would I even do this the hard way?
oh yeah, i'm using CS3.
Wrap feature off, notning changed since earlier today, same keyboard and so on. Going batty as I have an important job due Monday.
My workplace have been cs6 subscribers for several months now but as of yesterday they are still on cs6 and not been upgraded to cc. The update facility also shows no new updates available. Any ideas?
Fairly new to InDesign, last month I completed a project that contained a lot of text with white stroke which I formatted using paragraph styles. Recently I started a new project that requires the same text styles so I imported the paragraph styles from my first project. Unfortunately my "white stroke" paragraph styles no longer create white strokes in my new project. If I highlight the text and manually adjust the stroke a white outline around the text will appear but immediately after I deselect the text the stroke disappears. The stroke functionality still works fine in my first project file, any idea how I can restore stroke functionality to my second project file?
It's official, the handcuffs went into effect with CC's release. Files saved in CC will not open in CS6. The scheme works and forces existing users trying to stay current with their tools into Adobe's pay forever scheme. Yes there is IDML workaround but that is hardly a solution or group friendly, let along long term viable. I am stunned that CC actually shipped with this scheme still in place.
So today it begins. We have no choice but to give Adobe managers 100% control to stop access to our work, our long loved tools, and let Adobe hold anyone hostage at any moment for more money with a simple change to the ULA, or glitch. It's pay whatever the current keymasters decide, whenever they demand it, or lose everything. I am sick to my stomach.
Adobe, how could you do this to us, after 10+ years of devotion to building you up? Don't give me that story that it's too hard to support both CC as standalone and as Cloud, that is just a plain lie. Why not dump about 75% of the worthless apps added for "value" and use those resources. CS6 lags behind but sold forever is stupidity too, while we watch CC engineering efforts grow. This is disgusting. Excuse me, I need to go throw up.
