Possible Running Header Text Variable error

Has anyone else seen this error using the Running Header text variable? I have used a line break in a several-line heading in order to properly distribute the text. In the footer, that line break is counted as a space in the first instance of the running header, but on subsequent pages it isn't counted as a space. So if I put a space before the line break in the heading, I end up with two spaces on the first instance and one space on the rest, but if I remove the extra space, I end up with one space on the first instance and no space on the rest. I have to have the line break. I now have this problem in multiple books where I've used a forced line break in headings, and I believe the forced line break is the source of the error. If I remove it, I can get the running headers to space correctly. Weirdly enough, I have been able to export some of the offending documents to idml and fix the error, but this does not work on all of them. Anyone have any ideas why this is an issue and what I can do to fix it?

 

NOTE: I'm using 2017.0 on a Windows 10 computer. I didn't like the changes to the UI in the newest release of InDesign.

Did Indesign CC 2017 Get Rid of Snippets?

I am having great difficultly with a large book that requires a lot of copy/paste of external text and lots of styling.  Every time I copy new text into it, InDesign crashes and corrupts the file.  Lucky I have have saved out earlier versions but I'm midway through my book and can't get the rest of the content in.

 

I want to try snippets instead of copy/paste, but when I select a paragraph of text to export as a snippet, it doesn't appear as an a file choice under the format drop down menu.  Did CC get rid of snippets or is it called something else now?

Hallo,

 

Problemlos gelingt mir das Verketten von Textrahmen des selben Druckbogens.
Allerdings klappt es nicht Textrahmen unterschiedlicher Bögen zu verketten da
diese sich nicht beim Gedrückthalten von Shift nacheinander anklicken lassen
und dann beide ausgewählt sind. Weiß jemand eine Lösung?

Enabling form fields to 'track changes' at multiple different times within a single form document?

I'm very new to InDesign and would appreciate some help with creating interactive PDF forms. I'm looking to design a PDF form which will, in theory, be passed between two teams multiple times as a complex request progresses towards completion. Team A will first complete some of the form fields and pass it to Team B to action; then a few weeks later Team A might update the same form with more details and re-send it as a request to update the previous work, or Team B might send it back with some corrections or questions added for Team A, etc. I'd like this to be a PDF form so as to make it look attractive/reasonably modern and to keep the information for each request somewhat standard, but I'd also like to be able to use a single document version for each request (perhaps to be kept on a shared drive accessed by both teams), to minimise double-handling and version proliferation. I'd also like to enable each team to quickly identify the form edits made by the other team, each time a given form gets updated, rather than either team having to check through the entire form and cross-reference with related systems etc to check which parts of the request have already been done.

Additionally, any 'track changes' functionality also has to be user-friendly so that form users will actually make use of it. For example, I could put a radio button next to each form field asking the user to nominate 'Needs action from Team A', 'Needs action from Team B' or 'N/A' for that field, but I doubt the form users could be bothered doing that extra step for every field, every time they update the form.

 

A couple of vague ideas I have so far:

  • Is there a way of making the editing of one field, automatically prompt the updating of the value of a different field? (There does seem to be a way of one field prompting the appearance/disappearance of another field, but after that's been done once I'm not sure if that functionality would properly track changes in later editing rounds.)
    • In a related vein, is there a way of setting up a button or other action which will change all the values of a designated group of fields to [whatever]? That might be a more user-friendly way of using the radio button idea I mentioned above, if a given team can reset the radio buttons alongside all fields with one click, and then quickly cherry-pick the ones alongside the updated fields. If there's no 'update all these fields' functionality per se, could this perhaps be accomplished by a complicated 'hide all these fields' set up instead? (However, even if this is possible, I'm not sure if users would take to it so it may not be worth the trouble.)
  • I know that there's a 'text variable' option for adding a 'date modified' value to a document, but to my limited understanding it only applies to the entire document, and can't be applied to a single field. Is that correct?

placed images appear pixelated

hi,

 

i'm trying to create a layout for a comic book with indesign.

the images i use are from 300 PPI images. when i place them

in indesign they appear pixelated. i changed the display to high

quality, and the effective ppi of the images sais 300. what

else can be causing this?

I am really struggling with this document. Ultimately it will be 98 pages long. What you're seeing in the front and back pages. But right now both pages are Master A and when I add more pages, it doesn't add the boxes on the right, just a blank page. Can anyone help, in simple terms...I'm very new to this. HELP: "Fitting" toolbar buttons not showing up in CS5

Hi All,

 

I can't figure out how to get this to work. The toolbar buttons in CS5 are a bit different than those that show up when I am in CS4 and I am not familiar with the changes.

 

I like the "fit content to frame", "fit content proportionally", etc. as toolbar buttons.  I know there are keyboard shortcuts for these, which would be faster to learn... but I just don't work that way... I'm a visual person, I need to see and click on the buttons. But my CS4 buttons are gone in CS5.

 

How do I get the fitting toolbar buttons back when I have selected an image that I want to modify?

Bug: all dropdown menus lag mouseover highlight after scroll wheel

Is anyone else having this issue?

 

Steps to reproduce:

 

  1. Go to any scrollable drop-down menu within InDesign. Can't be a system drop-down; has to be an InDesign one. For example, this one works:

  2. Click the disclosure triangle to view the whole list.
  3. While hovering your cursor over the list, use the scroll wheel a bit to navigate the list.
  4. Then start moving the mouse again. There is a lag period of about a second when InDesign does not highlight list items the mouse is hovering over.

Problema con Librerie CC

Salve, da un po' di giorni ho questo problema con le librerie: anche se gli elementi sono presenti nelle librerie, i collegamenti sono mancanti. Se provo a ricollegare i collegamenti da librerie, mi dà la finestra di errore con scritto "Il file non esiste, è usato da un'altra applicazione oppure non disponete delle autorizzazioni necessarie"

Copy layer content between InDesign files

I'm trying copy layer content between 2 files, the sources file is a Spanish version of a training manual and the target is an English version. Essentially making a single multiple language file out of two single language documents.

 

I'm not well-versed in scripting.

InDesign constantly crashing since 2017 update.

Been working on a few different files for a few different clients, ranging from multi-page booklets (5.5x8.5" and 8.5x11" page sizes) to 2 sided menus, and ever since I've updated this week, my files take 30 mins to open (if they open at all) and then freeze when navigating throughout the document. (I've made books at the same size, over 150 pages with images and vectors with no problems like this before.)

 

So, 2 questions; is anyone else experiencing this issue, or an issue like this? I started using the CC libraries more often a few months ago (for vector assets like logos, not photos), could these linked files be lagging me out?

Converting indesign to word...

Hello!

Further to my post last week where I was trying to avoid having to convert my indesign doc's to word - in the spirit of 'the customer is always right' I now need to convert these 13 doc's over into word so that it can be edited at will.

 

I have exported the doc's to pdf, and am looking for a converter tool (preferably free) which I can use to do this. The doc's contain photos, and columns of text - nothing too crazy - I would be really greatful if someone knew of a good one? I have tried www.pdftoword.com but an hour later I still have not received any documents emailed to me.

 

Much appreciate your help as I am a long long way from competent at all this!

Single Caption for two or more pictures

Hello,

 

I'm having this problem. I want to have a single caption for two pictures that are going to be side by side in the text, representing the same image, but with different zoom levels. This is easy at first, just create a caption for the picture on the left and extend it to the right, under the second picture.

 

But what I also want was the automatic labeling Fig.2.7 and Fig.2.8 to be together in the same line. For the first picture i can do it, since when I create a caption it immediately displays the Fig. 2.7 (as it's usual for this level 2 paragraph style, that works fine for single pictures with single captions). But then Fig 2.8 only displays if I make a paragraph inside the caption and I wanted it to appear in the same sentence as Fig. 2.7 (like so: Fig. 2.7 and Fig 2.8: «description»), since both picture represent the same thing.

I achieved the caption like I wanted it to be (as shown in the above picture) by manually writing Fig. 2.8.

 

The problem is that when I place the next picture on the following page it will have the caption with Fig. 2.8 instead of 2.9. I tried to go around this problem by fooling InDesign and create a text frame between both pictures with this sub level paragraph style, outside the page frame, but it didn't work.

I'm thinking now of creating a caption for both pictures and drag the caption frame of the picture on the right into the area of the caption of the left, so it comes right after the first one, leaving an approximate space between them, like so:

This works, because now the picture on the next page has the caption with Fig. 2.9, but it's a nasty work around, trying to manually align the spacing and dragging. Is there a way to achieve this desired effect, without all this work? Basically having to consecutive sub level labels without having to make a paragraph OR a new paragraph style that allows this to happen (I also tried this, but my knowledge in InDesign is limited. In the next picture I provide the Number 'code' for the Paragraph Style I'm using for this captions).

Adjusting position of a dash from side to side

Hi all! This is probably a simple thing, but I can't figure it out. You know how can adjust one character up and down using the baseline shift? Is there a way to do that... except from side to side?

 

I have an agenda with a start time, a dash, and end time and the event. The start time, end time and events are tabbed so they all line up. But I can't do that with the dash between the start and end times because I want it centered... and those spaces vary depending on the time. So I'd like to scoot that dash a little left or right so that visually it looks like it's centered.

I've attached a screenshot that shows what it looks like with invisible characters turned on (left) and off (right).

I was just adding spaces after the start times and that works for the most part. But I thought maybe there was a more elegant way of doing that, as it is not perfectly centered when I do that.

 

Also, I just realized that in the example image, the start times all sort of line up. But that isn't the case throughout... some are quite a bit longer than others.

Can't load pass4press preflight profile

I've gone to the pass4press website and downloaded the p4p_v11_idcs5_preflight.idpp profile recommend by the magazine I'm creating an ad for. In the Preflight dialog where I should be able to import the profile, I get an error message that says, "Cannot load profile into the same document".

 

In Preflight, I'm going to Define Profiles window then Load Profile..., then I choose the idpp file provided by pass4press and get the error message.

 

Any insights as to what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Toggling between windows, Indesign freezes the entire computer

Hi all:

 

In a bit of a pickle with InDesign - hoping a kind soul has an answer as all my college project finals are within this program.

 

Boot up InDesign, no issues. Can edit and manipulate everything perfectly. HOWEVER, if I toggle between ID and Google Chrome, when I come back to Indesign, the program freezes my entire computer. No spinning wheel of death, complete freeze until I manually shut it down. **This also happens after I apply edits, save the InDesign file, and exit the program. The program freezes as it shuts down.

 

Yes, reinstalled it.
No, no viruses that I know of... no shenanigans of downloading weird things.

 

Unsure what it is, but would love to fix it to edit these final projects!

Can You Lock Cross-Reference or Index Tags?

I run a small creative department that creates and maintains 30 catalogs annually. There are several dozen "See Page..." references throughout the catalogs. We started using cross-reference tags a couple years ago but it seems as though some of them get deleted between catalog updates. Is there a way to lock these tags to the text so that the only way they would get deleted would be if the word to which they're attached is deleted? I have the same question about index tags.

 

We use Macs running El Capitan and InDesign CC 2014.

InDesign: Texto desbordado en celda de tabla

¿Es posible traspasar texto desbordado de una celda a otra celda en una tabla de Indesign?

Tengo una tabla de InDesign y un texto que se me desborda en una de sus celdas, cómo puedo vincular ese texto a otra celda para que pase a dicha celda. En QuarKXPress sí se puede hacer.
