Working in IndesignCC 2015.4

Need to produce interactive pdf that will be placed on web for download.

Have saved video as H.264 mp4

video places fine if I place the mp4 and save as interactive pdf but pdf will be too large with videos placed.

To work up a layout I had IT place the mp4 on the server so in Indesign I could link to the video from a url and keep pdf size smaller.

but when I try to do this in Indesign Place a file from a URL: I receive the message: Download failed because URL could not be verified

http://www.chandleraz.gov/content/BIKEPATH.mp4

If I click on the link it says page not found

I tried linking to the file at home incase IT had firewall blocking the link and I get the message.

Any info appreciated I can check with the  IT dept if their are any issues the way they placed the mp4 so I can work up the layout and link to that file.

I need to work up an interactive pdf so other options of epub or publish online are not options.

Adobe "technical support" chat -- a real concern

$

0

I am concerned that Adobe's "technical support" may have a criminal content.  I know of no other way to bring this issue to visibility because Adobe apparently allows no means of complaining about what happened.  They have no telephone support, and I can't find any means of filing a complaint.

My final attempt at getting a InDesign CS4 technical issue resolved ended with a tech support person (screen name: Gaurav Sharma) requesting and gaining access to my computer.  I allowed this because I've had this type of service from other vendors (MS, HP, etc.) and never had a problem.  In this case the Adobe tech person basically froze my ability to communicate with him.  And as soon as he (she?) gained access they started searching on financial account names.  Immediately, my bank, PayPal, and ISP names appeared on a search screen.

I had taken the expedience to remove all folders containing sensitive info from the computer beforehand, and also emptied the trash, so that access to this info could only be obtained by someone adept at getting at deleted info.  Hopefully the individual did not have time to obtain an real info.  I did a force quit and rebooted the machine.  Immediately afterward, I changed all account PW's.  A day later I received an "issue resolved" notification from Adobe and sent them an excoriating review, my only means of getting someone to pay attention, until this post.

But this is only the climax of a truly horrible five-day experience with Adobe's chat support.  The previous four days I spent hours with trying to get someone on the chat line to act as though there was a live, human brain at the other end.  It was a never-ending futile attempt at "pin the tail on the donkey."  It was absurd.  All in all, I spent perhaps seven pointless hours trying to get a tech support person to understand  that I couldn't re-install my InDesign CS4 because I couldn't get past the Installer's request that, in addition to the InDesign serial number, it was also requesting a serial number from a previous version of PageMaker.  I don't have PageMaker, and my copy of InDesign CS4 has been legally registered with Adobe since 2009.

For the record, here's a chronology of the events.

1.  While working on a residential home purchase agreement, my InDesign suddenly froze up and I got an Error: 148:3 upon reboot.  I'd never seen that before.  I couldn't get past it, so I figured that a clean re-install would solve the problem.

2.  I un-installed InDesign CS4, and inserted the disk in and started re-installing.  All went well.  I input the InDesign Serial number, OK.

3.  THEN it asked for a serial number from a version of PageMaker.  I used to have PageMaker decades ago but I haven't used it for like ten years.  So of course I couldn't get past that window.  Not knowing what to do, I contacted Adobe's technical support chat.  I figured it would be an easy ten-minute repair.  Little did I know...

4.  The first "tech support" person spent two hours with me trying to figure out that I wasn't trying to register a copy of PageMaker.  I ended up copy/pasting my previous replies because it was so inane: "no, I'm not trying to register a copy of PageMaker, the InDesign installer is requesting that I input a PageMaker serial number in, after I put in my valid InDesign serial number.  THAT's what the problem is.  Eventually I just broke the connection because it seemed like I was dealing with a robot, not a person.  Of course, I received a "problem resolved" email from Adobe the next day.  Interestiing, if you click on the "problem not resolved" link, it takes you to their generic support page which allows no way to send them that information.

5.  I tried again the next day.  Thinking I might get either a real human or perhaps not a ten-year-old being directed by expert screens, I kept reiterating my mantra from above, and beseeching them to please have me contact someone higher up, or give me a telephone number, or ANY means of contacting someone who could understand the simple problem I was having.  No luck.  Eventually, I just broke off contact again because after a couple hours of brainless circles, I simply capitulated.

6.  Two days later, I tried again and kept insisting to the tech person that I would not give up until they had either handed me over to someone who could understand the question or provide me with a telephone or email link.  And after another couple hours, that delivered me to Sra Gaurav Sharma, who as I mentioned at the beginning of this missive, immediately set about trying to obtain my personal financial information.

CS4 Re-installation problem

Could not re-install CS4 InDesign from my product disk.   After I type in my serial number (which is printed on the CD case), it prompts me for a serial number from an earlier version of PageMaker.  This is absurd.  I have no PageMaker product.  I own the InDesign CS4 disk (and package).  I've owned it since like 2009.  It ran fine on my computer for years.  I had a computer system problem which forced me to re-install it, and it won't install as it should.

{{Computer system information:  Running Windows 7.  Completely up-to-date with all MS updates, etc.  Prior to the problem, InDesign CS4 ran error-free for years}}

Just out of desperation, I have re-installed it as a "free trial."  I'm going to have to get this resolved as soon as possible.  Thanks in advance for any help rendered.

There is a second issue here: Adobe's "technical support" chat; which is horrible and possibly criminal.  I'm going to enter this as a completely second discussion related to this.

Adobe Acrobat doesn't recognise all of my text fields from a pdf created in Indesign?

Hello to all,

I have seen a similar question but no answer to it. I am making pdf documents in Indesign for a client and saving them off as interactive pdf files. I create lots of pages of text fields for my clients customer to fill in. When I test the pdf in Preview on my mac all text fields work, however if you open the pdf in Acrobat some text fields are randomly missing and I have no idea why.

In Acrobat it shows a black outlined box where the text field should be but it is not a text field and it won't let you delete the black outlined box. I'm having to recreate the missing text fields in Acrobat over the top of the blank black outlined boxes.

Can someone help as it is so random, and I am creating a lot of documents for them, some all fine some have two or three text fields missing.

Regards

John

Indesign CS6 hand tool gets stuck and can't use selection tool

In Indesign CS6 using Mountain Lion, the hand tool appears and I can't select or work with any other tool. All I can do is move the document around. After trying the space bar and other key commands I restarted and it worked for a while. Then it happened again. I work on a Macbook pro, so when I removed the mouse and worked only with the trackpad there was no change. When I quit and reopened, no change. I then deleted prefs and restarted and it worked, but it's been happening from time to time. Anyone know any other fix without restarting or deleting prefs.

Indesign no longer usable

Mac OS 10.11.4 / Indesign 2015

Wow.  I'm out of business.  I've been trolling the forums and have tried all the recommendations (safe boot, trash preferences, new user, etc.) but nothing is working.  The new version of InDesign (2015 I think) has set us back countless hours.

The program we've built our business on is no longer usable ... and the folks at Adobe apparently have no idea how to fix it.

Come on Adobe.  Please.

c6 spins after placing a photo over text in a large document

$

C4 didn't do this: I have display performance set to the highest of the 3 settings. I place a photo over a text box early in my large document. (I plan to then set text wrap so the text goes over the photo.) c6 spins forever, as it pushes text past the photo. c4 would do this in a reasonable amount of time. Even if this situation is avoided through a lower display performance setting, this gotcha will bite me and kill time until I learn to place photos outside the text box. Any suggestions in the mean time? ty

Indesign main window opening on primary monitor

$

I mainly use Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator (on Windows) and noticed all 3 programs behave differently when it comes to using a secondary monitor.

Photoshop: Once you've dragged the main window to the secondary monitor, next time you start the program it shows the splash screen on the secondary monitor and remembers the position of all the windows.

Illustrator: Once you've dragged the main window to the secondary monitor, next time you start the program it still shows the splash screen on the primary monitor but it remembers the location of all the windows.

Indesign: Once you've dragged the main window to the secondary monitor, next time you start the program it still shows the splash screen on the primary monitor and ignores the position of the main window, putting it back on the primary monitor (behind all the panels I have put there so I need to move around things in order to drag it back to the secondary monitor).

I don't mind Illustrator showing the splash screen on the primary monitor but Indesign is a real drag! Why can't it just open its main window on the secondary monitor where I left it when I quit my previous session?

Having all 3 programs behave differently is ridiculous. If Photoshop and Illustrator can open the main window on my secondary monitor then why can't Indesign?

I found a similar situation on the boards two years ago while searching, BUT:

I am not in Preview mode. I'm not in Overprint Preview. (I was a bit earlier, but now am no longer).

I did not Hide Frame Edges.

I just suddenly don't have an X in my photo frames anymore.

Can anyone tell me how I can fix this?  Thank you.

Hyperlink editing broken in latest release

Indesign 11.3.0.34 on Mac OS 10.10, Macbook Pro with lots of Disk space and RAM, no other apps running:

When I open Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks (to edit about 500 links in my document), I get very bad lag (spinny beachball for 10-20 seconds at a time) for every single tiny change I try to make to any aspect of any page element.

As soon as I close the Hyperlinks window the delay goes away. I can edit the links by using the dropdown menu, without the delays, but it's slow and requires many more actions.

This is new since the latest update.
