PDF with hightlights placed in INDD, the highlights dont print?

$

I have a PDF that has highlights all over it that look to have been added through Acrobat, not from the Word file it was probably created in before it was converted to PDF.  When these PDF's are placed into an INDD document, the highlights dont display or print.  When the PDF is viewed in Acrobat print preview, the highlights do show.

How do I get these highlighted areas to print when placed in INDD like it will from the PDF?

Footnote changes

Hi, I've just finished a chapter for an academic journal with over 30 footnotes.

The first footnote is in the title. now the client wants it changed to an asterisk, so footnote 1 is * and then footnote 2 becomes 1 etc.

Is there an easy way to do this? I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to turn SnapShot Utils Drawing Task off in Indesign CC 2015?

Just spent an hour being shuffled between 4 support techs only to be cut off.

This "utility" runs in the background and redraws the page anytime you make any kind of move on it, whether it's moving a text box or a photo. This task stalls out anywhere between 2-8 seconds, long enough for the beach ball to come up and spin. Beyond annoying and costing me production time. I am on Yosemite in case anyone is wondering.

I saw one other discussion on this topic, but no resolution. Anyone?

Hello there,

What's the best way to set a really long URL address in the footnotes. i found that the long URLs really mess up the spacing.

Some of the URLs are over 2 lines.  Thank you.

Rollover buttons

I have a client who wants the regions of the U.S. to change colors when you roll over them. They also want them clickable, and for each region to go to another page in the document. With the West states I have Hawaii and Alaska. Right now I have them as one button, but it then covers a different region so I have two regions changing color at once. . Is there a way to link two buttons to change colors at the same time?

Text Wrap Suddenly Stopped Working

Suddenly in all my documents, Text Wrap doesn't work. I can select the choices, but nothing happens. I went to the Objects menu and Text Frame Options is grayed out also. I have no idea what happened, why this function suddenly stopped working. I also tried creating a new document and tested it, with no results. I have quit and relaunched ID. also.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Hi,

during the loading of an InDesign document containing audio, video and buttons, I get the message: "There was an error while loading the document. Please try again" error code # 17. I tried several times but always the same thing happens. Other documents (without video) are loaded without problems.

Fonts in linked images cause printing problems

This is not a question as I have already solved this issue, I just wanted to save someone else the time.

Problem: Print job stops half way through document

Error Code: 49.4C02

Printer: HP line (3 different models)

Program used: InDesign CS6 from Creative Cloud

I had printed this job before and never had an issue. Then one day after many textual edits, the PDF stopped printing and would send the printers into a Fatal error which caused them to reboot. I had no idea what had happened or why. All I could remember changing was text. It was printing on some printers, but none of the printers on my floor. At first I thought the file was corrupt, so I resaved it. And resaved it, and resaved it. I saved it out with every type of export setting. I even replaced vector illustrations with crummy jpeg images. Still, not working. My boss is kind of an important guy for the government, so when he started to get upset, we all started to scramble for a solution.

Research suggested that we update the firmware which did not work.

I was suspicious of potential problem fonts, though it confused me as they had printed before. I opened the PDF and went to Properties > Fonts and saw a Type 1 font. Not familiar with this, I Googled it and after reading a bajillion websites, still could not find the answer in removing it.

Now at this point, I had removed all of that font family (Type > Find Font > Replace), exported, opened PDF, still there! WTF, really? InDesign could no longer find this font.

Here's what happened.

Well, because in the new CS6, Preflight is no longer something that you have to manually go to, it works automatically similar to dynamic spell checking. My document did not have any errors, but I knew it HAS to have some sort of error. I went to the Preflight window (Window > Output > Preflight), clicked on the menu tab and went to "Define Profiles...". Well, well, well. Because the 'Default' setting put in place by Adobe does not actively have "Font Types Not Allowed" selected, it was not catching the Type 1 font that was causing a day of wasted IT resources and my sanity.

I made a new Profile, checked "Font Types Not Allowed", checked ALL of the "Type 1" options, saved and let it scan. What's this?! 1 error!? Hmmmm... it was coming from a linked .eps file! I opened the file, I must have forgotten to outline the font during all of the changes. And I'm assuming that because the font was linked via an element, that when InDesign went to export all of the fonts, it did not have access or did not know what to do with the font that was in my .eps file, so what it did was turned it INTO a Type 1 font (or as I learned, a PostScript font) and embedded it along with all of my other fonts into the PDF. Which is why when I was trying to find this font earlier, it couldn't be found because it wasn't IN the document, it was LINKED to the document. This font on its own prints fine, but it gets converted to a PostScript font when it is within a linked element within InDesign.

My whole office did a dance of victory once we fixed the problem. Ridiculous. So I hope now, if someone ends up having the same problem I did, now they know where to look to find the problem! It would have saved everyone here some time if the default "basic" preflight wasn't so "basic".

InDesign CC 2015 relink image dialogbox issue El Capitan

Hey, I just started testing InDesign CC 2015 with El Capitan. Now the first problem occurs: If I want to relink an image there's no longer an info about the image-name in the dialogbox. Has anybody else this problem? Is it an unactivated option in the Finder? I cannot find any options to enable that bar on top of the dialogbox.

For your interest: I disabled 'menubar automatically hide' in the systempreferences of El Capitan. It's not possible for me to work without that info... I attached two screenshots, one from the box in Mavericks, the other in El Capitan.

Help! InDesign won’t launch... and I have tried everything

(iMac OS 10.11.4, late 2012, 2,7 GHz, 8Mb)

I am hoping someone can help me as I am about to lose my mind with InDesign CC 2015 not launching! I have an iMac with ElCapitán OS installed and for the past month or two I have barely been able to work. The CC Desktop application behaves erratically, and 8 times out of 10 the InDesign icon bounces and the application simply will not launch. I have wasted entire workdays uninstalling and reinstalling both CC Desktop and InDesign, always an excruciatingly slow process, to no avail. I have deleted preferences on launch and tried just about every trick mentioned in all the forums: installing Muse, disabling the menu bar automatic hiding feature, settting CC Desktop as a login item, and many other suggestions that I can’t even remember. I have used Activity Monitor to try to find a culprit, and deleted my bank’s security plugin which seems to slow everything down. Sometimes the application takes a really long time and finally launches; other times I can go for half the workday without being able to open a single file. Other apps, such as Photoshop, work fine.

When I do get Indesign to launch, I do everything I can to never turn the computer off – as the problem is worse if I restart. To be fair, I must say that I am experiencing a lot of color wheels, with the Finder dragging for the simplest operations.

Yesterday I finally gave up and performed a clean install on my Mac, starting over fresh. After a full day of installing all the apps anew (I didn’t migrate from a backup), to my complete disbelief, I am still unable to launch InDesign.

Does anyone have any fresh ideas? I am  really at my wit’s end and my work is piling up!

Thank you!

Hope this makes sense.

Importing Microsoft Word "hidden text" attribute

In InDesign CC 2015, is there a corresponding feature for the "hidden text" attribute that is in Microsoft Word? I use the "hidden text" attribute in Word so that I see certain text (such as directives from another person) when I am adding to a file and need to know where to put content. When I imported my MS Word document into InDesign,  hidden text now becomes visible.

Exporting to PDF from InDesign

I have been working on an InDesign publication for a few weeks now, and periodically have been able to export it into a PDF document after I save it as an InDesign template. Just today, it will no longer let me save it as a PDF. I have no idea what is different. I've added a few more pages, a little more text, and some more png or jpeg pictures to the publication, but nothing different from what I've been adding all along. Please help! I am trying to share this and get it published by this weekend. I don't know what's going wrong, but InDesign crashed every time that I try to export to PDF. I've read a ton of forums about making sure your links are embedded or your pictures aren't grouped or your text isn't unrecognizable... but nothing has worked so far. I'm at a loss as to what to do for this to work.

Thank you.

Hello,

i have a table of contents like this:

1. Topic
1.1 xxx

1.2 xxx

2. Topic
...

I wanna have an empty line between the topics.

Can i teach InDesign to insert an automatic line break?

Maybe by paragraph styles? Would be easy here, because the style could insert a line break

before the text !everytime the style will be used.

Automatisches Abbildverzeichnis mit Quellenangaben

Hallo Zusammen

Irgendwei versuche ich vergebens ein Abbildverzeichnis mit Quellenangaben zu erstellen.

Beispiel:

Abb.10: Das super Bild (Bildname), www.dabinich.com............................................1(Seitenzahl)

Also ein Abbildverzeichnis mir Abb.
