breaking up a story into several ones

Working on a book, let's say I have ten ID files with one story each, and each of these ten stories is many (100+) pages long, each page containing one text frame. Those editing tasks which cause new line break are very frustrating, because one change here can cause the mouse to appear for more than one minute, forcing you to just wait and sit there. Not the kind of thing you easily tolerate a few days before the deadline.

Now my idea is this: in each file, break this long story into several stories, each perhaps some twenty pages long. This way, editing should become more easily done because ID does not need time to calculate text flow changes.

My simple question is: how break up a story into several ones?

When double-clicking on the out port of the text frame that I want to define as the last one (before breaking the story), all I get is a loaded cursor I don't know what to do with ...

Any help greatly appreciated.
