InDesign hanging under OS X

InDesign CS6 (8.0.1) hangs (spinning wheel) sporadically on OS X (10.8.3) and can only be stopped by using Force Quit.  We suspect this is occurring because some dialog box came up, then got hidden behind the InDesign window.  (I've confirmed that this does happen.)  How do we bring the dialog box to the foreground so that we can acknowledge it?  I've confirmed that Command + Tab does not help.
